A two part workshop on two Saturday afternoons in January.
A discussion and workshop on the ways capitalist society damages our mental well being. We’ll discuss everything from housing, to advertising, from secure units to endless waiting lists.
We will also look at how a more anarchist society could foster better mental well being, and how we can apply anarchism to improve our lives in the hear and now.
The workshops will take place from 14:00 – 18:00 with a break in the middle. We plan to stay in the space after to allow more informal discussion, and to keep the space open for anyone that doesn’t want to be alone after such heavy discussion topics.
The second Saturday (21st of January) we will hold a second session where we look at more practical steps we can take to support each other in our communities, groups, and friendships.

BASE Cafe Collective has, for a long time, provided filling and yummy Sunday meals, a lot of which comes from gleaned produce – from field and shop alike.
On Sunday 11th after the Cafe’s meal, BASE Arts Collective and Avon Gleaning Network will be screening The Gleaners and I, Agnes Varda’s poem to the waste-saver, the stooper in the field, the bin-diver.
We’ll do a short intro to the Gleaning Network and what they’ve achieved in only a couple of years, saving tonnes and tonnes of produce from going to waste. This produce is then redistributed to charitable food projects who are supporting people experiencing food insecurity.
This is the right time to talk about food waste. At Christmas, binned food usually amounts to 42 million dishes of Christmas dinner…
You never know, you may organise your first bin-dive or glean on the crisp morning of the 12th

Paris, 1892. If you’re not rich, things look bleak. Political bombings and police crackdowns tear the city apart. Out of this carnage steps Emile Henry, a young anarchist preparing his war against the State. But when he hears strange mumblings from the future, madness beckons… Dead White Anarchists_ is a solo theatre show – a Molotov cocktail of radical history lesson, spoken word and sci-fi crime thriller. It’s a reflection on a bloody past and a chaotic present, but always holding hope for the future. Written and performed by Paul Case Directed by Emily Ingram
“A throwback to when political theatre meant the exploration of grand universal ideas… the piece doesn’t flinch. Four stars” – The Wee Review
PLUS spoken word open mic! Handful of slots available, five minutes each, sign up on the night.
BASE social centre in Bristol has provided an important space for community and organising for a better world for over 25 years. Putting principles of mutual aid, solidarity, self organisation and co-operation into practice it has been an inspiration to many. This autonomous, not for profit space has contributed so much to Bristol’s good reputation as a city of radical and progressive politics. BASE has provided genuinely affordable / free space to a wide range of community, campaign and activist groups and hosted innumerable events of all sorts. It is a place where people can meet others, socialise, eat, work, learn and organise together as equals. We are very proud of all that it stands for and all that it has achieved over the years and long may it continue.
Like many grassroots community projects, BASE has been really badly affected by the pandemic. We took the decision to keep the cafe, our primary source of income, closed to prioritise community safety and to avoid contributing to the spread of covid 19. This has meant that while our principles of collective care, mutual aid and solidarity are in good shape, our finances are not! The project’s reserve funds are now at a critically low level. So, it’s about time for some sponsored stuff! We get that everyone is a bit tired of yet another crowdfunder, so we thought we’d give this one some legs!
A group of BASE volunteers and supporters are running a half marathon along the Devon coast on 5th February to raise some much needed funds. While there may be some nice views along the way, it’s undoubtedly going to be an arduous metaphor for the struggle! It is described by the run organisers, Endurance Life, as “punishing” and “severe terrain”. Because the tougher it is the more money we raise, right? We will get it done, in the spirit of the old revolutionary adage of “Run comrade, the old world is right behind you!”
If you value autonomous, free, not for profit, community spaces please contribute to the crowdfunder and share it as widely as you can. Your support for BASE social centre is really appreciated.
